President Trump is trailing a generic Democratic candidate by 8 points in a new 2020 poll released Wednesday.
The Politico/Morning Consult poll found that 44 percent of voters would pick a generic Democratic candidate over Trump. Thirty-six percent would vote for Trump, while 19 percent are undecided.
Democratic voters would overwhelmingly pick the Democratic candidate, 82 percent to 8 percent. Republican voters also would vote along party lines, choosing Trump, 79 to 7 percent. The Democratic candidate leads 35 percent to 29 percent among independents.
Republicans, however, may have more of an advantage with Trump on the ballot. The poll found that 42 percent of voters would pick a generic Democrat over a non-Trump Republican. Only 28 percent would vote for the Republican, and 31 percent are undecided.
“Trump supporters are lukewarm about voting for any Republican presidential candidate other than Donald Trump,” Morning Consult co-founder Kyle Dropp told Politico.
The poll was conducted March 1-5. It surveyed 1,993 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
