A new political action committee opposing one of President Trump’s fiercest congressional allies wants to unseat Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan.
The Jordan Watch was launched by Janet Garrett, a Democrat who has unsuccessfully tried three times to unseat the conservative Freedom Caucus member in his solidly Republican district. Garrett has said she does not intend to run against Jordan again, but is now putting her efforts into opposing him generally.
The PAC was launched with the stated purpose of transforming “our remarkable grassroots fundraising into an organization that can help recruit Jim Jordan’s next opponent, and also work to expose Jim’s radical ideology to the people he is supposed to represent.”
Zach Stepp, the committee’s executive director, said in a Tuesday news release that the organization would work to “recruit qualified candidates from both sides of the aisle” in order to defeat Jordan in 2020. The release calls Jordan “the laughing stock of the nation” and links to a Saturday Night Live skit mocking the congressman’s questioning of Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal attorney.
Stepp told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the committee files its Federal Election Commission paperwork under the name “Ohio CD-04 Watch.” The PAC reported $240 in the bank at the end of last year.
