Drivers getting a wider, safer Spriggs Road

More than 22,000 Prince William County drivers will see some relief on Spriggs Road.

County leaders will cut the ribbon Saturday on the four-lane divided road, complete with a new bridge over Powell’s Creek, sidewalks and trail.

The $9.4 million county project from Forest Park Drive to Minnieville Road that began in December 2003 also realigned the Minnieville and Spriggs intersection to improve a sharp turn because it was “a safety hazard for a lot of young drivers,” said Tom Blaser with Prince William County’s transportation department.

Between Jan. 1, 2003, and Dec. 31, 2005, there were 239reported crashes on Spriggs Road between Dumfries and Minnieville roads, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Forest Park and C.D. Hylton high schools are both located on Spriggs.

“Anything that will improve coming to and leaving the school will make a difference, and the four lanes will make it safer,” said Eddie Campbell, Forest Park High School assistant principal. “When all the improvements are completed, it will make a big difference.”

Contractors have begun the second widening project on Spriggs Road to Hoadly Road. The entire widening of Dumfries Road will be completed next year and the Minnieville project is still in the design phase.

“This is part of a larger effort to improve the transportation network in southeastern Prince William,” said Sean Connaughton, Prince William County Board of Supervisors chair. When all of the projects are completed, “it will end up diverting a lot of traffic from some of the more congested areas in Dale City,” Connaughton said.
