The number of insurance claims area homeowners filed following Hurricane Irene have nearly doubled since Monday.
As of noon Tuesday, Maryland State Farm insurance holders had filed 6,683 home insurance claims and more than 500 auto claims. Virginia residents had filed 5,830 claims on their homes and more than 600 auto claims, and District of Colubmia residents had filed 254 home and 25 auto claims.
By comparison, Maryland residents had filed 3,364 home and 300 auto claims as of the same time Monday, while Virginia residents had filed 3,137 home and 450 auto claims and D.C. residents had filed 200 home and 25 auto claims.
Neither Allstate nor Travelers will release claim numbers.
State Farm spokesman Jeff McCollum said he expects more claims to be filed as area residents dig out and find the extent of their damage.
