WHAT: The department awarded the Monkton Conservation Commission $150,000 to build a “critter crossing” under a busy highway so salamanders and other reptiles can cross safely.
WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: The grant came from federal funds given to Vermont for “transportation enhancement projects.” (Editor’s note: The “enhancement” was intended for humans, not lizards.)
