Protests marking the first anniversary of Breonna Taylor’s death erupted into violence across the West Coast.
Protesters clashed with police in Seattle, Portland, and Los Angeles on Saturday, leading to dozens of arrests and damage to local businesses.
Videos from Los Angeles show people dressed in the signature all-black of antifa and carrying antifa flags running around the scene. At one point, a police officer was hit by a computer.

Videos also showed demonstrators climbing on top of a police car. Protesters threw rocks at police officers, according to KNBC, and vandals broke the windows of a CVS and a Bed Bath & Beyond store. Three officers were injured.

Seattle police arrested 13 people for charges ranging from assault on an officer to resisting arrest. The department posted photos of a damaged Starbucks that had sustained graffiti and a shattered window during the demonstration. Officers on bicycles were captured making arrests in the city.

Demonstrators in Portland, a city besieged by riots and protests in 2020, gathered outside of a federal courthouse. “POLICE ARE MURDERERS” was scrawled on a wall of the courthouse. The incident follows a Thursday protest, in which protesters burned American flags, set a fire outside the federal building, and attempted to break into a bank.
Protests in Louisville were peaceful, with activists marching through the city, calling for justice for Taylor and chanting “say her name,” a slogan often repeated in earlier protests. Benjamin Crump, Lonita Baker, and Sam Aguiar, attorneys for Taylor’s family, told the crowd that they wouldn’t stop fighting until officers were prosecuted for the death.
Taylor was killed by members of the Louisville Metro Police Department in 2020 after officers executed a no-knock warrant on her home. Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, shot at officers, who returned fire. Walker was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, a charge that was dropped.
Crump in September called for peaceful protests after violence erupted in response to a grand jury decision not to charge any officers with her death. Two Louisville police officers were shot, and more than 100 people were arrested in the city, with violence breaking out in major cities across the country.

“We want to honor Breonna’s legacy. We want to respect Breonna, especially now, when she wasn’t respected in this grand jury proceeding. Let’s show Breonna the ultimate respect by having peaceful protests in her name,” Crump said.
Former Louisville Metro Police officer Brett Hankison was charged with three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment over the incident for allegedly endangering Taylor’s neighbors during the raid. None of the officers involved were charged directly in connection to her death.
Breonna Taylor’s death was a tragedy, a blow to her family, her community, and America. As we continue to mourn her, we must press ahead to pass meaningful police reform in Congress. I remain committed to signing a landmark reform bill into law.

In a tweet marking the anniversary, President Biden called Taylor’s death a “tragedy” and urged Congress to pass “meaningful police reform,” adding that he was committed to signing a police reform bill.
