Hollywood is serving up a fresh take on the 1990s sitcom that helped catapult Will Smith into stardom.
Bel-Air promises to be a darker, more dramatic take on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, according to a trailer released by NBC Universal on Monday.

“Set in modern-day America, Peacock’s new one-hour drama series ‘Bel-Air’ imagines the beloved sitcom ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ through a new, dramatic take on Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air,” the show’s description on Peacock reads.

The reboot is inspired by Morgan Cooper’s fan-made trailer from 2019, which has garnered over 7 million views, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Cooper is listed as the director, co-writer, and executive producer on the show’s page.
Smith, who starred as the Fresh Prince teenager in the original series, does not seem to be return for the reboot. However, the actor expressed his support for the show on social media.

Some users on social media seemed optimistic about the reboot, while others deemed it unnecessary.
If Bel Air kicks off a wave of Very Serious sitcom reboots, perhaps Mike Leigh could be persuaded to rewrite Absolute Fabulous as a bittersweet story of a beleaguered young woman attempting to live independently from her grasping alcoholic mother and abusive surrogate aunt.

my main takeaway from the new Fresh Prince is that they made it so Uncle Phil is no longer a really cool fat guy. how about more of those on TV? but no, every man needs to look like a Theory model now…
