WATCH: DeSantis urges Florida residents not to ‘panic buy’ due to Hurricane Ian

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is urging residents who plan on remaining in the state for Hurricane Ian not to hoard supplies.

The storm is expected to hit the state with strong winds as soon as Monday evening. By midweek, it’s expected there will be heavy rainfall.

“There’s no need to panic buy,” DeSantis said during a Monday morning news conference in Tallahassee. “If you don’t normally drink a lot of water, you may not need to go out and buy 20 gallons of water right now. So just do what you need to be prepared.”

DeSantis said his office had been in contact with retailers such as Publix and Wal-Mart and that they are “constantly re-supplying.”

He also urged residents who have prescriptions to make sure they have what they need to get through the storm.

When it comes to gasoline, DeSantis also urged residents not to hoard.

“Obviously, you need fuel, fill up your tank. Some people have some extra, that’s fine. But we are continuing to bring it in. Now, when the storm’s coming close, hitting, there’s going to be some interruption to that. So people should be prepared for that. We do have contracts with folks that can bring some fuel in if necessary.”
