Pence walks back opposition to Trump’s Muslim ban

Donald Trump’s newly appointed running mate Mike Pence walked back harsh comments he made last December bashing the presumptive GOP nominee’s calls to pause immigration from countries affiliated with terrorists.

“I am very supportive of Donald Trump’s call to temporarily suspend immigration from countries where terrorists’ influence and impact represents a threat to the United States,” Pence said.

“I’ve never hesitated to take issue with fellow Republicans, I don’t think things came out quite right or how I would’ve done it. But I want folks to know I strongly agree with Donald Trump’s call. We’ve got to do something different.”

But eight months earlier, Pence went on the record saying Trump’s comments that Muslims should be banned from the country were “offensive and unconstitutional.”

Pence explained his prior stance, which he said was a miscommunication, by explaining that Indiana suspended the Syrian refugee program after attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, Calif.

The newly minted vice presidential candidate said he has talked with Trump about the issue and realized changes must be made to produce different and better results.
