Police seek man suspected of Howard bank robbery

Howard County police are continuing to search for the man they say unsuccessfully tried to rob two Ellicott City banks, before successfully striking a third.

On Thursday, between 5:49 and 6:25 p.m., a black man in his mid-30s attempted to rob First Mariner Bank and Sun Trust Bank in Ellicott City, police said. The man entered the bank and demanded money, but the tellers refused his demands.

In a third attempt, the same man successfully robbed the Sun Trust Bank in the Enchanted Forest Shopping Center.

The man did not display a gun at any bank, and no tellers were injured, police said.

Robberies are up 10 percent this year in Howard County, from 122 during the first six months of 2005 to 141 during the first six months of 2006.

In 2005, a total of $1 million was stolen from Maryland banks during 208 robberies.
