Immigration and Customs Enforcement has captured a fugitive illegal immigrant convicted of raping a minor after he was released from custody six times because of sanctuary city policies.
Kristian Jonas Gamez Trejo, a 25-year-old Honduran national convicted of felony sex with a minor in 2016, has been arrested by San Francisco law enforcement six times but was repeatedly released in defiance of an ICE request to hold him, according to Breitbart.
Trejo was captured by ICE on April 28 after spending years on the agency’s “Most Wanted” list.
“Once again, I am waiting for San Francisco officials to tell me how not turning over Mr. Gamez made our community safer. San Franciscans deserve better,” ICE San Francisco Field Office Director David Jennings said in a statement. “There is no reason this convicted child predator should have been turned loose into our community. Even California’s misguided SB54 sanctuary policy allows local authorities to turn over to ICE any criminal aliens convicted of felony crimes of sexual exploitation or crimes endangering children.”
Trejo’s record also includes a conviction for domestic violence, and he has been deported twice since first illegally coming to the United States six years ago.
ICE says they removed or returned 267,000 illegal immigrants in fiscal year 2019 and arrested 143,000, of which 86% had criminal convictions or pending charges.
“ICE is focused on removing public safety threats, such as convicted criminal aliens and gang members; as well as individuals who have violated our nation’s immigration laws, such as those who illegally reenter the country after a prior removal, and immigration fugitives ordered removed by federal immigration judges,” the statement read.
San Francisco lawmakers voted in 2016 to uphold its sanctuary city status a year after the high-profile murder of Kate Steinle at the hands of an illegal immigrant who had also been released from custody.
“Since 1989, San Francisco has proudly been a Sanctuary City,” the San Francisco mayor’s website says. “We will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our immigrant communities and fight for the progress we’ve achieved in this City. We are a sanctuary city, now, tomorrow and forever.”
