Meghan McCain battles ‘The View’ hosts over White House Correspondents’ dinner

Meghan McCain sparred with her co-hosts on “The View” Tuesday by arguing that the White House Correspondents’ dinner helped President Trump by showing that most of people in the media hate Trump.

“I will say this is a big gift to Trump supporters,” McCain said during Tuesday’s roundtable discussion.

Michelle Wolf’s stand-up routine at the annual Washington dinner and her jabs at press secretary Sarah Sanders and other Trump officials drew complaints from both the Left and the Right. The White House Correspondents’ Association president has since said she “regrets” that Wolf’s performance didn’t contribute to the unifying message of the night.

McCain said the performance was worse than that, since it reaffirmed the animosity and stereotypes Trump’s supporters have for the media.

“And there’s already this implication when you hear people like Jim Acosta saying Trump supporters: ‘Their elevators don’t go to the top floor.’ There’s an idea that the media, especially in D.C., hate the Trump administration, hate Republicans, hate people in the middle of the country,” she said.

Sunny Hostin, who attended Saturday’s dinner, disagreed and said the event was all about celebrating journalism.

“You’re saying it should be in the spirit of journalism, and I was in the room and it was all about the spirit of journalism,” Hostin said, noting the event raises money for scholarships.

Whoopi Goldberg also disagreed with McCain. “I take issue with you saying that we hate the middle of the country,” she said. “That’s not true.”
