SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah’s attorney general has announced new technology that will get AMBER Alerts out faster when a child is kidnapped.
Members of the public can sign up for notifications through the Law Enforcement Alerting Portal, also called the LEAP system. It sends alerts through email, text, fax and RSS feeds.

Utah launched its AMBER Alert program in 2002, but officials say the system got slower as more and more people signed up.
Attorney General Mark Shurtleff says speed is all-important when it comes to AMBER Alerts, and the new technology will once again help officials spread the word about kidnappings immediately.
Officials say 17 abducted children have safely been brought home thanks to Utah’s AMBER Alerts.
