Trump says he’s uniting the country, not dividing it

President Trump said Friday he has a responsibility to unite the nation, and said he has been successful so far.

“I think I am in a certain way bringing it together,” he said in an interview with Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business Network. “I can tell you that a big portion of this nation is united like it’s never been united before.”

Trump’s comments came after Bartiromo pressed him on his continued recent criticism of former Sen. John McCain, who died last August. Bartiromo implied that the president’s attacks on the late senator were divisive, after many Republicans criticized Trump for saying he was “not a fan” of the late senator.

“I think I am bringing it together,” the president repeated. “I think I’m bringing it together—”

“Not by talking about John McCain,” Bartiromo interjected.

“I just said, you brought up a question, Maria,” the president responded. “I didn’t bring it up. I didn’t mention John McCain until you asked me a question about John McCain.”

Trump cited job growth as an achievement of his that has helped everyone.

“You look at our economy,” Trump said. “You look at jobs. You look at African-American — the lowest in the history of our country — unemployment numbers, the best numbers they’ve ever had. Hispanic. You look at Asian. You look at women, the best in 65 years, best numbers in 65 years.”
