Democratic VP nominee Tim Kaine urged supporters in Iowa not to presume a Hillary Clinton victory on Tuesday, lest they risk turning the country over to Donald Trump.
Kaine told a crowd gathered at Loras College in Dubuque that he would rather be in Clinton’s position than Trump with under one week to go, but that the race is far from over.
“You can’t take anything for granted because polls can be wrong,” Kaine said, going through a list of reasons not to take the election for granted. “We can’t take it for granted because Donald Trump’s going around whining it’s rigged … He can whine all he wants but the better we do and the bigger we win, people will just know it’s he’s being a sore loser.”
Kaine also indicated that Clinton’s supporters owe it to her to get her elected because of the effort she has made as a candidate.
“The last thing about why we can’t take it for granted is because Hillary is trying to do something that’s never been done,” Kaine said in reference to Clinton’s quest to become the first female president. “We’ve made it uniquely difficult for women to be elected to federal office in this country, so Hillary is running into a headwind.”
The Democratic vice presidential nominee argued that if all goes well for Clinton on Tuesday, women and girls all over the country will believe for the first time that they too can serve as President of the United States.
