Fairfax County Executive Anthony Griffin has made some changes to his proposed fiscal 2007 budget as the Board of Supervisors prepares to make its final alterations on Monday.
Griffin is seeking to include nearly $900,000 to add Sunday hours at county community libraries. The money would allow for the addition of 30 workers to open libraries on Sundays from noon to 6 p.m., the same hours as at the regional libraries.
“Sunday hours at community libraries were eliminated in fiscal year 1992. … In recent years, the demand for Sunday library services has grown considerably,” Griffin said.
The proposed Sunday hours at community libraries are among several additions to the county budget to encourage the growth of cultural facilities throughout the county in the 2007 spending plan. Other items include partial funding of the Lorton arts center and a challenge grant pool of $1.1 million in part to bring more local art to public spaces.
