Terrorism hits Germany: Afghan pulls ax on train passengers

More than 20 people riding a southbound train through Wurzburg, Germany, were attacked by an ax-wielding 17-year-old male late Monday.

Authorities said the Afghanistan national went on a rampage, yelling “Allahu akbar” before cutting people aboard the train with an ax and stabbing others with a knife, according to the national broadcaster ZDF.

He was shot by police while attempting to flee near the Heidingsfeld region of the city.

Three people were seriously injured, one reported minor injuries and 14 others are being treated for shock as a result of the incident.

Investigators said the unnamed assailant arrived in Germany last year as a migrant. The unaccompanied minor was one of 14,400 youths who showed up in the country last year without parents and applied for asylum. He had recently been placed with a foster family.

The train line has been closed as police investigate.
