Jason Isbell gets personal

Jason Isbell has built a large fan base in this area and he’s got a special treat in mind for them.

The next Isbell concert will be a solo acoustic show during which Isbell will showcase some of his well-loved songs from his solo career as well as from his tenure with the Drive-By Truckers.

“There’s something about when people go into a show knowing it’s a solo acoustic performance,” said Isbell. “I don’t have to spend time putting the crowd in a certain mindset like you have to on big electric rock and roll shows.”

As an integral member of the Drive-By Truckers, Isbell knows plenty about such rock shows. His solo efforts haven’t been as high profile as his work with the Truckers, but he is still hailed as a great songwriter and musician.

Some of the profile shift may well be due to the differences between the sound and audiences of the Truckers — Southern country rock — to Isbell and his band the 400 Unit that is more alt-country or indie rock like Ryan Adams, with whom he recently toured.

In fact, Isbell said that the tour with Adams was a highlight of the past year because of the welcoming audiences.

“I’ve been playing for Ryan’s crowd, for the most part,” he said of the split between his fans and Adams’ that attended the show. “They got into it and it and the whole tour was fun.”

Now that he’s on the solo tour, Isbell’s thoughts have turned to a live record that he and the 400 Unit plan to record during August in Birmingham. He also continues to write a new studio album, the follow-up to “Here We Rest,” but has no definite plans for a completion date.
