‘I’d hope to run again’: Ted Cruz leaves door open to 2024 presidential bid

Sen. Ted Cruz isn’t ruling out launching a presidential campaign in 2024.

During an interview with the Washington Post Wednesday, the Texas Republican was asked a question from a reader on whether he plans to run for president in the next election cycle.

“I don’t know for sure. I’d hope to run again,” Cruz said. “I got to say, in 2016 we came very, very close. And it’s the most fun I’ve ever had in my life. I am committed to the principles I’m fighting for. I believe passionately in free enterprise and the U.S. Constitution. And so in the Senate, that’s what I’m fighting for. And we may see another campaign in the future as well.”

Cruz, who hosts the podcast Verdict with conservative commentator Michael Knowles, told the Washington Examiner last month that it was “no secret” he ran for president in the past and “came close” to winning the GOP nomination. He described it as the “most fun” he’s had in his life.

The Texas Republican also said he likes the idea of using his podcast to communicate with people, similarly to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s fireside chats.

“I am excited about the podcast as a tool. I like the fireside chat analogy. And look, FDR used that powerfully, used the new medium of radio to connect directly with the American people in a time of crisis,” he said.

Cruz and Knowles have interviewed significant public officials on the podcast, including Attorney General William Barr, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott.
