British pop singer George Michael dead at 53

British pop superstar George Michael died Sunday at the age of 53.

Michael, who first achieved fame as half of the British duo Wham! and then went on to success as a solo star, died at his home in Goring in Oxfordshire, England of unknown causes.

“It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period,” his publicist said in a statement. “The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”

Michael was both critically and popularly acclaimed, selling millions of albums and receiving numerous awards, including a pair of Grammy awards.
