Police find live deer in vehicle during Pennsylvania traffic stop

Police in Pennsylvania pulled a vehicle over late Thursday night and found a live deer in the trunk.

The Newberry Township Police Department told the Washington Examiner it stopped the vehicle after it committed a traffic violation. Officers conducting the traffic stop suspected the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the NTPD.

That’s when they discovered the deer.

The occupants of the vehicle, a 19-year-old female driver and a 21-year-old male passenger, told police they hit the deer and then placed it in the back of the car. The police statement said they didn’t initially realize that the animal was still alive but continued driving when they discovered that it was.

Police said an officer had the male passenger lift up and release the deer from the vehicle, and the driver was taken into custody as part of the DUI investigation. The deer was able to run away once released, though the extent of its injuries, if any, are unknown, police told the Washington Examiner.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is assisting with the incident, according to the NTPD.
