Barnard College receives ‘violently racist’ robocalls on Christmas about Tessa Majors

Following the death of Barnard College freshman Tessa Majors, the school has received a number of racist robocalls promoting white supremacy.

Multiple university employees have received the same racist robocall in the wake of Majors’s death earlier this month. In the recording, a man blames the slaying of the 18-year-old student on race, according to the New York Times.

“We condemn this racist, anti-black act in the strongest possible terms and have referred it to the N.Y.P.D.,” a Barnard spokeswoman said. “Our community stands together against hate.”

The Christmas Day recording is just under two minutes and includes a rant about Majors’s parents, chastising them for allowing their daughter to spend time with people of other races.

“Remember to teach your children, ‘Around blacks, never relax,’” the man in the recording says.

The message ends by saying it was paid for by a white supremacist website called Road to Power, which has been behind other racist and anti-Semitic phone calls during the 2018 midterm elections.

According to police, the NYPD’s Racially and Ethnically Motivated Extremism unit is investigating the calls. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the formation of the unit this month.

Majors, who was an aspiring artist and musician, was found on Dec. 11 with multiple stab wounds across her body in a park near the prestigious liberal arts college of about 2,300 undergraduates.

A 14-year-old is one of the suspects in her slaying. Police believe she may have bit his finger during a botched mugging and caused him to stab her in a fit of rage. Another suspect, Zyairr Davis, 13, was arrested soon after the death and charged with felony murder.
