Comedian Sarah Silverman lamented “cancel culture” during an interview at the 2019 Emmy Awards.
Silverman, known for her brash and abrasive style of comedy, said there is pressure today not to push comedic boundaries too far or to cross any lines.
“There’s definitely pressure,” Silverman said. “There’s a kind of righteousness porn going on in this cancel culture. There’s nuance to it. There’s good and there’s bad. As a stand-up, it’s really odd.”
The 48-year-old stand-up and actress ironically appeared to cross the line during Sunday’s interview itself, while continuing to describe the current state of comedy when she was suddenly cut off by Fox.
“To talk about what’s really going on or to talk about the world as we decide to see it — or to push to see where the line is and to go past it — is so oddly unacceptable it’s safer to…” Silverman said before the sound cut out, although according to Deadline, she appeared to have finished her sentence with “just make p—y jokes.”
The remarks come about a week after incoming Saturday Night Live comedian Shane Gillis was axed for “offensive, hurtful, and unacceptable” comments about Chinese and gay people he made on a podcast surfaced.
The 2019 Emmys were the lowest-rated in the awards show’s history and the first without a host.
