Two dead and 70 injured after 200-car pileup in Montreal

Two people are dead and scores were left injured after a massive crash in Montreal involving about 200 cars.

A sudden blizzard swept through the Montreal suburb of La Prairie, Quebec, on Wednesday, leading to poor driving conditions that resulted in a mile-long stretch of highway littered with destroyed vehicles.

“Pretty much everything with four wheels was involved,” said Sgt. Marie-Michelle Moore of the province’s police force.

Images from the scene showed some cars completely totaled and at least one school bus with the front of the vehicle caved in. Of the roughly 70 who were injured, 20 were taken to hospitals in critical condition. Some people remained trapped inside their vehicles for hours as authorities combed through the tangle of wrecked cars, trucks, and buses.

“I spoke to a few people who couldn’t see anything, and then they saw trucks up close. These people were immediately pulled aside and looked after,” said Sebastien Lavoie of the La Prairie fire department.
