Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says he would not automatically accept an offer by Donald Trump to be vice president.
“It’s not an automatic ‘yes,'” he told the Associated Press in an interview published Saturday.
Gingrich is among the top tier of potential running mates being vetted by the Trump campaign. Gingrich said he thinks Trump will make his choice Thursday or Friday, before next week’s Republican convention.
He said that he thinks Donald Trump is a “necessary candidate” amid global anti-establishment sentiment.
The vote by Great Britain to leave the EU, according to the former Speaker, is part of “a worldwide movement toward really being angry at the establishment … really feeling that government has failed, and I think Trump is part of that worldwide movement.”
