Labyrinth’ at E Street Cinema’s Midnight Madness, Friday and Saturday There’s something fun, even special, about midnight film screenings. Oftentimes it’s the first look at a new film, such as a “Harry Potter” premiere. Other times, midnight is best reserved for a cult classic.

Since the fall of 2009, Landmark’s E Street Cinema has held what management calls Midnight Madness. On Friday and Saturday nights, the theater in D.C. screens popular and quirky films, some newer, such as “The Human Centipede” series; some older, like the old standby “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” According to E Street House Manager Paul Klein, the theater takes suggestions from guests, staff members and friends.

This weekend, E Street shows “Labyrinth.” This 1986 classic features the unlikely talent pairing of Jim Henson and David Bowie. Henson, best known for his Muppets, directs the fantasy film starring one-time glam rocker Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King. The result is a magical movie experience, perfect for midnight.

MLK Memorial Dedication Ceremony and Concert on the Mall, Sunday

There are few people who have had such an impact on the history of the United States. And there are even fewer monuments on the National Mall. So it’s appropriate that civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. is recognized with a grand monument on the nation’s front yard. There are plenty of pay events this weekend, but the actual dedication is free and open to the public, as is the concert that follows.
