A woman who was temporarily thrown off a Southwest Airlines flight because of her choice of attire has received a refund and apology from the company.
Kayla Eubanks, 22, was barred from boarding a Southwest flight at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on Tuesday because she was wearing a black halter top that Southwest staff said was in violation of its dress policy.
The incident went viral on Twitter as Eubanks chronicled the experience in a number of posts on the social media platform.
In one post, Eubanks said staff at the airliner had informed her that the top she was wearing was “lewd, obscene, and offensive” before refusing to let her board. Eubanks was offered a T-shirt by the captain of the flight, and she was allowed to board while wearing the shirt.
A representative from the airliner said that even though it refunded Eubanks and issued an apology, the company wanted to reiterate that passengers should try to look “tasteful.”
“While Southwest’s dress code is relaxed and casual, you will be expected to present a clean, well-groomed, and tasteful appearance,” the representative told the Hill. The representative added that Southwest’s dress code policy aims to “promote a family-centric environment.”
