A new poll showed Donald Trump leading Hillary Clinton by 1 percentage point in Iowa.
Trump earned the support of 40 percent of those surveyed, followed by Clinton at 39 percent, Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson at 10 percent and the Green Party’s Jill Stein at 3 percent, according to a survey for the Des Moines Register on Monday.
In a two-way race, the GOP nominee maintained the 1-percentage-point lead, 43-42, according to Simpson College and RABA Research, which conducted the poll.
“This poll shows that both Trump and Clinton have a loyal, dug-in base of support showing little movement, even when Iowa voters are given an alternative candidate from which to choose,” said Kedron Bardwell, head of Simpson’s political science department, to the Register. “The campaigns of both Trump and Clinton have even more reason to ratchet up their ground games to make sure the votes are there on election day.”
With 56 days remaining until Election Day, RealClearPolitics’ average of Iowan polls labeled the Hawkeye State a toss-up and place Trump ahead of Clinton by 0.8 percentage points.
