Notre Dame fire extinguished

Fire officials in Paris said Tuesday morning the fire that damaged most of the Notre Dame Cathedral’s roof and its central spire had been extinguished.

Investigators are now trying to determine the cause of the massive blaze and whether the nearly 850-year-old cathedral is structurally sound.

“The fire has been completely extinguished,” said Gabriel Plus, a spokesman for Paris firefighters. “A group of experts will now analyze the structures to decide on the next steps.”

Some of the historic artifacts saved from destruction were a crown of thorns believed to have been worn by Jesus Christ and a tunic worn by St. Louis, according to Jose Vaz de Matos, a fire security expert for the French Culture Ministry.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the cathedral will be rebuilt.

Some have already pledged to donate to the rebuilding, including French billionaire François-Henri Pinault, who is married to American actress Salma Hayek. Pinault vowed to provide 100 million euros.
