New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte pounced on Friday’s news that the FBI plans to reopen its investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server, using the opportunity to question her opponent’s judgment.
“Gov. [Maggie] Hassan has repeatedly dismissed Hillary Clinton’s private email server as merely a ‘mistake,’ and she has repeatedly dodged questions about her misconduct,” Ayotte, who is at the center of one of the most bitter Senate battles, said in a statement released by her campaign.
She added, “Clinton knowingly jeopardized our national security, and in light of today’s news, Gov. Hassan needs to answer for her inability to call her out even on her most egregious national security failures.”
Hassan came under fire earlier this summer for thrice declining to say whether Clinton is “honest and trustworthy.” The two-term Democratic governor endorsed Clinton last September and joined her and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., on the campaign trail earlier this week in Goffstown, N.H.
Ayotte carries a slim 1-point lead over Hassan in the RealClearPolitics polling average of likely voters in the Granite State.
