P.G. Council woman to give up car, take driver-safety course

A Prince George’s County councilwoman who was caught speeding 105 mph on the Capital Beltway said she is giving up her county-owned vehicle while she completes a driver safety course.

Councilwoman Karen Toles, D-Suitland, was traveling as fast as 105 mph on the Beltway on Feb. 22 when she was pulled over by a Prince George’s County squad car, police say. An officer issued Toles a citation for an unsafe lane change, but she was given only a warning for going 50 mph over the speed limit.

Toles announced Wednesday she was voluntarily give up access her county-owned car while she completes a driver improvement course. She also promised to pay the $90 fine for her unsafe lane change citation.

The officer who stopped Toles did not have a properly calibrated radar gun and was unable to establish a pace to determine exactly how fast Toles was going as she sped southbound on the Beltway, according to Assistant Police Chief Kevin Davis.

The police department will convene an executive review panel next week to review the incident to ensure no special treatment was given to Toles. New police inspector general Carlos Acosta will sit on the panel, as will other police commanders and officers.

The panel has the authority to issue further citations or charges against Toles, Davis said.
