Republican Donald Trump’s wife Melania broke her silence Saturday on the controversy engulfing her husband’s campaign.
In a statement released by Trump’s campaign, Melania supported her husband even while condemning vulgar remarks he made about women in a resurfaced video from 2005.
“The words my husband used are unacceptable and offensive to me,” Melania said. “This does not represent the man that I know. He has the heart and mind of a leader. I hope people will accept his apology, as I have, and focus on the important issues facing our nation and the world.”
In the 2005 video, first released by the Washington Post on Friday, Trump is overheard on a hot mic talking with a celebrity gossip show anchor as he arrives on set of a soap opera, where he was set to make a cameo appearance.
Trump makes several lewd remarks about women, including how he attempted to have sex with a married women and how many women let him aggressively hit on them because he’s “a star.”
After the Post’s report, Trump released a video apologizing for the comments.
