Pr. William board to hear final report on immigration policy

The Prince William County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to receive the University of Virginia’s final report on the county’s high-profile crackdown on illegal immigration today during their 2 p.m. business meeting.

The board commissioned the University’s Center for Survey Research to conduct an “unbiased, social-scientific investigation” on the impact the policy would have on the local community.

The debate over the policy drew national attention several years ago; the original mandate was so broad that it asked county staff if it was possible to keep illegal immigrants away from the county website and off the streets, but was scaled back multiple times.

The county board in October 2007 approved a law directing police to check the legal status of anyone they arrest if they had probable cause to believe they were in the country illegally. Then, in April 2008, the board voted to require police to check the status of everyone arrested.

The University of Virginia released an interim report on the policy last August.
