Two National Guardsmen deployed to DC find glass inside pizza delivered via Uber Eats

A pair of South Carolina National Guardsmen deployed to Washington, D.C., to provide security during recent demonstrations protesting police brutality, discovered an unpleasant surprise baked into the pizza they ordered while in town.

While staying at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in the District, the two Guardsmen ordered a pizza using Uber Eats from an unnamed establishment, according to a Department of Defense report shared with the Post and Courier.

When the service members opened their pizza, they found shards of glass in the dough and cheese, the report said. Neither guardsman was injured, and the pair was advised by commanders to report the incident to local police.

D.C. police told the newspaper they received no complaint.

“The command says that the soldiers are OK, and that this was the only incident to their knowledge,” said Capt. Jessica Donnelly, a spokeswoman for the South Carolina National Guard.

Since the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes, hundreds of thousands of people have flooded the streets of dozens of cities, demanding an end to police brutality.

The demonstrations have at times turned violent, with widespread looting, arson, and vandalism taking place.

President Trump had threatened to send in federal troops in order to quell the civil unrest if local law enforcement fails to do so.
