Uber will offer free rides to and from select venues of importance to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in its 40 top markets across the nation this weekend.
Customers will have two credits each, up to $20 per ride, to spend this weekend, Uber announced Friday. The move comes after a gunman killed 49 people and injured 53 others a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla., over the weekend.
Discounts automatically apply to any rides that start or end at selected locations, valid from noon Friday to the end of Monday night.
“Like people across the world, we were deeply shocked and saddened by the recent murders at a gay nightclub in Orlando,” the company said in a blog post. “The world is a brighter and better place when we are all free to be ourselves. And we want to bring people together, no matter who you are or where you’re from.”
In Washington, D.C., for example, venues include Nellies, Cobalt, the DC Center, Whitman Walker Clinic, Number 9 and Town Danceboutique.
Other cities participating in the offer besides D.C. are New York, San Francisco, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Charleston, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Toronto, New Orleans, Miami, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angeles and many others.
Each city has roughly five to 10 locations that qualify for the free ride promotion. Each city already has its own webpage to notify people of the qualifying venues.
Though Orlando is not on the list, Uber has already been giving unlimited free rides to the families of victims and survivors in the attack, which was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history and the country’s worst terror attack since 9/11.
