Though the calendar clearly says spring, D.C.-area residents awaking Sunday morning were treated to a light dusting of snow throughout the region.
The snow and a cold front arrived just in time for the opening weekend of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, a supposed transition from winter to tourist season for the Washington-Metro region.
Those in Washington for the festival, however, need not fret – National Park Service spokesman Bill Line told NBC Washington that the trees should be able to withstand the early spring snowfall.
But the unseasonable cold looks like it could linger. For the rest of Sunday, the National Weather Service is forecasting a partly sunny day with highs around 40, with highs in the mid-40s for Monday, upper 40s Tuesday, and rain expected for Wednesday.
