Chuck Schumer to Trump: Either reverse family separation policy, or ‘own up to it’

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called on President Trump to either reverse his administration’s immigration policy that has allowed the separation of adults and minor children or to stop blaming Democrats for the situation at the border.

“Let me say this to President Trump. President Trump — you could undo the policy tomorrow if you want to with the snap of your fingers,” Schumer said. “And, President Trump, if you don’t want to change the policy, own up to it and defend it instead of blaming somebody falsely.”

“Either reverse it, which you could do, or own up to it,” Schumer said, adding that Trump’s claim that Democrats are to blame for the situation is “false and untrue.”

Schumer’s comments came amid increased pressure on the administration as they continue to carry out their “zero tolerance” policy to deter immigrants at the border. The administration says family separation is the byproduct of current law that does not allow minor children to be detained with adults.

Trump has said in recent days that Democrats are at fault for the ongoing immigration issue despite Republicans holding both congressional chambers. Schumer said that Trump’s claim is “not showing much strength or courage of conviction.”
