Study: Drugstore prescription sales on the decline

Vertis has announced the results of its Customer Focus 2006: Drug Store Study, which revealed that only 58 percent of adults who visited a drugstore in the past 30 days purchased a prescription.

According to the Baltimore-based marketing company, that number has been steadily decreasing during the past six years, from 62 percent in 2004 and 64 percent in 2000.

“In recent years, the Internet and mail orders have simplified the process of purchasing prescription medicine, which has a direct effect on drugstores,” Scott Marden, the company?s director of marketing research, said in a statement. “Drugstore marketers need to identify an effective media mix to connect consumers and promote the benefits of their diverse offering and personal consultation.”

The study, which looks at purchasing trends of drugstore consumers, also revealed that only 13 percent of respondents said they always purchase their prescriptions from a drugstore.
