Cindy McCain urged new lawmakers to follow in the footsteps of her late husband by “serving a cause greater than yourself.”
“To all who took the oath of office today: please take that oath with dignity and honor. Please serve with humility. Be worthy of serving a cause greater than yourself,” she tweeted Thursday as members of Congress were being sworn in.

Her husband, Arizona Sen. John McCain, died in August after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer.
In December, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey appointed Republican Rep. Martha McSally to fill McCain’s former seat when Jon Kyl stepped down after temporarily replacing McCain in the Senate after his death.
McSally had a rocky relationship with the McCain family over her embrace of President Trump’s rhetoric. Following the announcement of McSally’s appointment, Cindy McCain said Arizonans would be “hoping that she will follow” her late husband’s “example of selfless leadership.”
Shortly after her husband’s death, McCain said the late senator’s leadership should be an example for all Americans.
“Whether it was to demand the best possible leadership and support for our armed forces, or to empower freedom fighters against dictators around the world, or to demand that perpetrators of torture and human rights abuses be punished, or to make sure our native American communities are treated with dignity and respect. John McCain fought for others every day of his life, whether he was wearing a uniform or standing on the floor of the U.S. Senate,” McCain wrote in an op-ed.
