Spokesman: George H.W. Bush is ‘breathing well on his own with minimal supplemental oxygen’

Former President George H.W. Bush, who was recently hospitalized and admitted to the intensive care unit for a respiratory problem related to pneumonia, “is breathing well on his own with minimal supplemental oxygen,” a spokesman said Friday.

“President Bush remains in stable condition in the ICU at Houston Methodist Hospital,” spokesman Jim McGrath said. “He was extubated this morning, and is breathing well on his own with minimal supplemental oxygen.”

Added McGrath: “President Bush is comfortable and watching inauguration coverage together with Mrs. Bush, their son Neil and daughter-in-law Maria. President Bush will remain in the ICU for observation.”

The health of former first lady Barbara Bush — who was also admitted to the hospital this week after experiencing fatigue and coughing — is also improving, the spokesman said.

“Mrs. Bush, meanwhile, continues to feel better and is focusing on spending time with her husband,” he said. “She is expected to remain in the hospital over the weekend as a precaution.”
