Metro considering extensions of train lines

Metro is planning for the future, looking at what transit is needed to handle the region’s growth in 2040.

The Washington Examiner reported Wednesday about some of the possible new rail lines the agency is studying. Brown Line? Capital Beltway line? Mid-city line? All big ticket projects.

Metro is also looking at extending some of the existing lines:

  • Orange Line west from Vienna out to Gainesville
  • Silver Line to Leesburg
  • Red Line from Shady Grove to Metropolitan Grove
  • Blue Line from Largo Town Center to Bowie
  • Yellow Line from Huntington to Lorton along U.S. 1
  • Green Line from Greenbelt to Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport
  • Green Line spur from Congress Heights to National Harbor

None of these has funding, nor has any design work been done. But Metro officials say that building a line can take some 10 years — ahem, Dulles Rail project — so they need to start studying and planning for what would make the most sense.
