Brown says he’ll keep education under his oversight on D.C. Council

D.C. Council Chairman-elect Kwame Brown told The Washington Examiner that he will keep education in the committee of the whole, which he will oversee.

The chairman has the power to reshape council committees as he sees fit. Current Chairman Vince Gray placed education in the committee of the whole to which every council member belongs. Gray used his oversight position on education to help shape the city’s policy, including the creation of a schools chancellor who operated independently from the school board.

Brown said he plans to do the same.

“This will ensure every council member will be collaborating,” Brown told The Examiner. “It’s absolutely important that we keep moving forward with education reform.”

This is the first statement Brown has made regarding any of the committees.

Brown said he is bringing school board member Lisa Raymond on to serve as his senior education adviser.
