ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley sent out an e-mail on Tuesday asking for donations to a group that is pushing for same-sex marriage legislation in the state.
“At the end of the day, across our state, all of us want the same thing for our kids,” the e-mail says. “We want them to live in a loving, caring, committed and stable home protected equally under the law. That’s what the fight for marriage equality is about.”
The e-mail directs readers to a fundraising page on the website belonging to Marylanders for Marriage Equality, a group of pro-same-sex-marriage advocates that includes local chapters of the NAACP and the Service Employees International Union.
O’Malley, a Democrat, also quoted from — and linked to — a Washington Post story about a black minister who supports same-sex marriage.
“As Prince George’s Mount Ennon Baptist Church’s Pastor Delman Coates explains, ‘It is not a question of private belief but whether all citizens of this state have the same rights,'” O’Malley writes, quoting the Post story.
Legalizing same-sex marriage in Maryland is one of O’Malley’s top legislative priorities this year.
