Suspect in Harlem police shooting dies

A 47-year-old suspect accused of killing one New York Police Department officer and critically wounding another has died, according to police.

An NYPD spokeswoman confirmed Monday that Lashawn McNeil has died. McNeil was accused of fatally shooting NYPD Officer Jason Rivera, 22, and wounding Officer Wilbert Mora, 27, after they responded to a domestic dispute in Harlem on Friday night. Mora remains in critical condition.

McNeil was shot twice by a third NYPD officer after wounding Rivera and Mora, police said. He was receiving treatment at Harlem Hospital for his wounds following the incident, police sources told CBS New York.

Police said on Monday that investigators found a “loaded AR-15 assault weapon” under the suspect’s mattress after executing a court-authorized search the day after the shooting.

McNeil was a convicted felon who was still on probation for a 2003 drug conviction, NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said at a press conference.

McNeil had been arrested several times prior, including in 1998 for gun possession, which was later dismissed, and in 2002 in Pennsylvania for assaulting a police officer, according to the New York Post.
