Rep. Ashley Hinson hospitalized for kidney infection

Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) was admitted to the hospital on Sunday to be treated for a kidney infection.

Jimmy Peacock, the Republican congresswoman’s chief of staff, released a statement Monday updating constituents on the status of her health.

“Congresswoman Hinson was admitted to UnityPoint St. Luke’s Hospital yesterday evening where she is being treated for a kidney infection. She is looking forward to being back on the road soon. She appreciates all of the prayers and well wishes,” Peacock said.

Her spokesman added that evening that Hinson “is feeling better, but still undergoing treatment.” She will stay at the hospital overnight.

“She sincerely appreciates everyone who has reached out, and is grateful for the incredible doctors and nurses at St. Luke’s Hospital who have provided phenomenal care. We will continue to provide updates,” Peacock said in a statement.

Hinson, who entered Congress in 2021 after narrowly beating Democrat Abby Finkenauer, is in a competitive race for Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District against Democratic challenger Liz Mathis, who, like Hinson, is an ex-TV news personality.

The two candidates were slated to debate Tuesday on Iowa PBS. The event has been canceled in the wake of Hinson’s hospitalization.

Hinson, 39, is one of 47 House Republicans who voted with Democrats to pass the Respect for Marriage Act, which would protect same-sex marriage at the federal level. The legislation is currently under consideration in the Senate.

The Iowa congresswoman currently represents the 1st District, which covers the northeastern part of the state, including Cedar Rapids. The new 2nd District, redrawn during the decennial redistricting process, is rated R+6 and covers roughly the same region.
