Sen. Bernie Sanders said the Democratic Party has treated him poorly, but vowed to help elect Hillary Clinton if she wins the Democratic presidential nomination over him.
“No,” the Vermont senator said Sunday when the “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd asked him if the party has been fair to him. “Look, we’re taking on the establishment. That’s pretty clear.”
Sanders noted that the Democratic National Committee appeared to schedule early debates on weekend nights in an effort to aid Clinton’s attempt to stay out of a primary fight fight with Sanders by limiting viewers.
“But you know, that’s the way it is. We knew we were taking on the establishment,” Sanders said. “And here we are.”
Sanders suggested he will not drop out of the contest before the primary schedule concludes in June.
“We are in this race,” he said. “We are not writing our obituary.”
He made it clear, though, that he will support Clinton, but said the onus is on the former first lady and senator to win over his backers.
“I will do everything that I can to make certain that Donald Trump is not elected president,” Sanders said. “But if that scenario plays out, the major responsibility will be on Secretary Clinton to convince all people, not just supporters, that she is the kind of president this country needs to represent working people in this country, to take on the big money interests who have so much power, to fight for what the American people want.”
