Three people have died after a driver plowed into hoards of people in a tunnel close to San Diego City College.
Authorities were dispatched to the tunnel shortly after 9 a.m. local time on Monday morning, according to NBC San Diego. The driver, whom police identified as a 71-year-old man but did not share his identity, is suspected of driving while impaired and is in custody, according to the Associated Press.

“Our crews found, obviously, a tragic incident under the bridge,” San Diego Fire Department Chief Colin Stowell said, calling the events “a very tragic emergency and incident that impacts all of us.”
The suspect was driving a Volvo station wagon westbound on B Street when he veered to the right and onto the sidewalk, where he hit multiple people. In total, nine people were harmed, and five were taken to the hospital for their injuries, two of whom were hurt critically.

The area also has a large homeless population, according to the San Diego Tribune.
