Fireworks in Maryland’s Ocean City accidentally set off during setup for July Fourth show

Fireworks that were part of a July Fourth display in Ocean City, Maryland, exploded prematurely Sunday morning while workers prepared for the show.

Employees of a fireworks company received minor injuries in the accidental discharge of the fireworks and refused transport to the hospital by paramedics, the Ocean City Fire Department said in a Facebook post. No pedestrians who were near the fireworks were injured.

“Prior to the fireworks being offloaded from the vehicle, fire marshals secure a safe zone around the fireworks and put other safety protocols in place. It is this very zone and safety protocols that kept anyone else from being injured,” said Ocean City Fire Chief Richie Bowers.

A large plume of smoke, which witnesses originally thought was from a vehicle fire, arose just off the water, video showed.

Beachgoers closer to the site of the incident saw explosions going off and fireworks shooting upward in all directions, according to another video.

“Ocean City Fire Marshals are continuing safety inspections at both fireworks locations after the unintended discharge of fireworks on the beach this morning. Due to an abundance of caution, this evening’s Downtown Fireworks have been canceled. Updates for the Uptown Show at Northside Park will be provided when they become available,” the fire department said.
