Jim Carrey calls Hollywood ‘spineless’ for giving Will Smith standing ovation

Celebrities’ reactions to Will Smith’s behavior at the Academy Awards were not a hit with Jim Carrey.

The actor viewed his colleagues’ reaction as a slap in the face to the people who once admired the entertainment industry, slamming “spineless” Hollywood celebrities who praised Will Smith for slapping Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards and saying he was “sickened by the standing ovation” Smith received from the audience attending the event.

“I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it just really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore,” Carrey said Tuesday on CBS Mornings.

The 60-year-old actor condemned Smith’s viral performance at the event, saying he should have been arrested after slapping Rock and that he would have sued him for $200 million if he were the one to be slapped. The comedian is likely declining to press charges against Smith because he “doesn’t want the hassle,” Carrey said.

Smith apologized to Rock hours after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday it would review the incident.

Whoopi Goldberg, the governor for the Academy’s Actors branch, said the academy would explore consequences for Smith but would not strip him of his Oscar.

Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, broke her silence regarding her husband’s actions on Tuesday, writing on social media, “This is a season for healing and I’m here for it.” Will Smith’s son Trey expressed his frustration over coverage of the event on Monday, while his other son, Jaden, seemingly condoned his father’s actions almost immediately after the ceremony.
