Thousands take to the streets as protests grip Russia

Thousands of people protested across Russia against government corruption Sunday and hundreds were arrested in the biggest wave of demonstrations to hit the country in five years.

Alexei Navalny, a leading opposition figure and critic of the Putin regime, was among those arrested in Moscow, where reports indicated at least 500 were detained. Protests were reported as far east as Vladivostok.

The protests were launched after Navalny published a report charging that Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev had amassed a more than $1 billion fortune that includes mansions, yachts, and vineyards.
